In 2010, ARMA Vancouver Chapter, ARMA Canada Region, the First Nations Summit Society and the First Nations Public Service Secretariat signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the aim of fostering capacity building, mentorship, training and networking opportunities for individuals working in First Nations Communities and organizations who are responsible for Records Management tasks.

As a direct result of the MoU, several initiatives have been undertaken including the First Nations Information Management Toolkit, inclusion of First Nations content at the ARMA Canada Conference, ARMA Vancouver education sessions, and the 2016 First Nations RIM Day Symposium.

The inaugural 2016 First Nations RIM Day Symposium originated from a need to fill the capacity building void when the First Nations Public Service Secretariat ceased operations in 2012. The Symposium has now evolved into an annual event encompassing both Yukon and British Columbia through broader partnerships with communities and organizations in each region, including:

  • Kwanlin Dün First Nation,
  • Teslin Tlingit Council,
  • Training Policy Committee,
  • Yukon Government,
  • Tsawwassen First Nation,
  • Naut’sa Mawt Tribal Council,
  • Tsleil Waututh Nation, and
  • the First Nations Summit Society.

The focus of the Symposia is on practical knowledge and skills that participants will be able to bring home and utilize. In addition, participants will be asked for suggestions for future work that will further support First Nations in building capacity for information management.
