CFLA Copyright Committee Update (January 2022)

At the January meeting, the CFLA Copyright Committee discussed the following activities:

• Discussed Library Futures International Statement of Solidarity and agreed with the principles, however, the committee had reservations about some of the introductory content. The group will further consider the principles in developing the CFLA CDL position statement.
• Committee will begin to examine UNDRIP principles, engaging with Indigenous Matters Committee.
• Sent letters to Ministers Champagne (Innovation Science and Economic Development/ISED), Fortier (Treasury Board/TBS), and Rodriguez (Canadian Heritage/PCH) in follow up to the Federal mandate letters.
• Representatives from the crown copyright working group met with ISED and TBS in November and discussed open government licences and cc-by licence. This follows up on CFLA’s earlier recommendation of assigning a cc-by licence retroactively and moving forward, with the ability to make exceptions as necessary.
• The CFLA CDL working group has completed external review of the paper discussing the legal framework for CDL in Canada and is preparing to post the pre-print on SSRN and have it available publicly in the week of Jan 31-Feb 4. It will then begin preparation for publication in Partnership.
• Discussions continue on AI and accessibility.
