Onboarding is far more than just signing paperwork, reading library policies, and learning day-to-day duties. In an ever-changing library landscape, organizations need to provide new employees with the tools that will allow them to adapt to their roles quickly and effectively. Calgary Public Library created a Project Team to assess their current onboarding practices, connecting with key stakeholders (managers, supervisors, IT, HR) to create a streamlined process for onboarding new staff. This helps ensure that all new employees receive cohesive and consistent training and fosters an understanding of library culture and their organization’s mission and values. We will share our process and the benefits resulting from this project, as well as some specific tools and tips that other organizations can use to enhance their own onboarding processes.
Date: Wednesday, October 15th, 2025
Time: 12:00pm – 2:00pm ET
Intended Audience:
New supervisors, managers and leaders, and colleagues interested in leadership roles. Everyone is welcome.
Facilitators:
Evette Berry is celebrating her 25th anniversary with Calgary Public Library, 15 of them as a Manager of Service Delivery. She enjoys supporting staff in their work and has contributed extensively to onboarding, supervision and coaching staff in a number of library locations. She worked collaboratively on revamping the system onboarding process, which was a great opportunity to help ensure that staff get the best introduction to CPL possible. Outside of CPL, Evette has worked with many library professionals, including as editor-in-chief of Partnership: The Canadian Journal of Library and Information Research and Practice, to produce its bi-yearly issues.
Janice Parker has worked for the Calgary Public Library for more than 25 years in a variety of research, public service, and leadership roles. In her current supervisory role at the Central Library, she leads and supports a team of 80 and coordinates onboarding of all new team members. Janice is currently pursuing her MLIS degree from San Jose State.
