Details

Library and Archives Canada and Carleton University are pleased to announce an upcoming event, a hackathon for RDA metadata using resources from a diverse selection of Canadian authors.

This event will inspire cataloguers as we link the works of several of Canada’s creative literary artists and use RIMMF to build the connections in a hands-on and collaborative learning session. Authors highlighted are: Lee Maracle, Thomson Highway, Lawrence Hill, Dionne Brand, Felix LeClerc, Gabrielle Roy, Lucy Maud Montgomery, and Stephen Leacock!

At this event, you will learn RIMMF (RDA in Many Metadata Formats), a training tool designed and created by Deborah and Richard Fritz to help cataloguers think in RDA terms and see how RDA might look in the future.

The event will be led by Deborah Fritz with assistance by coaches who have volunteered from the professional cataloguing community.

It is an introductory session aimed at library cataloguers and others involved in metadata and resource discovery. A familiarity with FRBR concepts such as WEMI is assumed.

To keep things simple for the limited time available, our focus for this session will be resources containing:

  • single works
  • in single or multiple expressions
  • Carried:
    • in unmediated volumes
    • in audio discs, cassettes, or online
    • in computer discs, or online resources

Presentations at the event will be given only in English, although the RIMMF tool has a French interface and some resources will be French-language.

Attendance is limited to 50 (including coaches). Participants will have free access to the RDA Toolkit for 30 days beginning on the day of the event.

You will only need to bring a web-enabled laptop with RIMMF installed to the event. All materials for the resources to be RIMMF’d will be provided at the event.

Registration is now open until December 16th!

Please email bac.normesdecatalogage-cataloguingstandards.lac@canada.ca providing:

  • your name,
  • your institution’s name,
  • and any special accommodations requirements.

Please note that no refreshments or lunch will be provided.

Once registered, you will need to do a little preparation before the event:

  1. Download RIMMF3
  2. Go through the Tutorials
  3. Practice using RIMMF with simple examples
  4. Participate in a pre-event online tutorial session with Deborah.

  • An understanding of the basics of library linked data.
  • An understanding of the issues facing collaborative cataloging in the Semantic Web.
  • A local set of data structured as pure RDA in RIMMF format, to play with, build on, and share with colleagues.
  • A set of linked data triples available on a special section of the RDA Registry, to play with, build on, and share with colleagues and friends.
  • Disclaimer: Although this event is not for teaching RDA, participants are likely to learn a great deal about relationships and linked data in RDA.

We look forward to you joining us!
