The Archives Association of B.C. is pleased to announce that it will be holding the 3-day version of the Digital Preservation Management Workshop this October in Vancouver with funding from the Documentary Heritage Communities Program.

Taught by experienced DPM faculty—Nancy McGovern, the director of DPM workshops who is responsible for digital preservation MIT Libraries, and Kari Smith, Senior Digital Archivist at MIT Institute Archives and Special Collections—this workshop is intended for individuals who are or will be responsible for the long-term preservation of digital content.

The curriculum walks through the roles, stages, and activities necessary for an institution to define and build a sustainable digital preservation program, including the policies, procedures and strategies to frame and guide the program. The instructors have very generously offered to participate in a number of follow-up calls with the participants to help you maintain momentum after attending the workshop.

The workshop includes interactive presentations, group discussions, exercises, and individual assignments. Workshop attendees explore the range of components needed to develop an effective digital preservation program. Workshop materials include action plans for organizations to complete when participants return to their institutions. Action plans result in organization-specific plans that incorporate technical, financial, organizational, and policy aspects encompassing the full life cycle of digital objects. The workshop focuses on strategies for organizations to implement now, while research and development goes forward in creating longer-term solutions that can be incorporated into the program framework. Workshop curriculum is continually updated to reflect the latest community standards and practice.

The workshop begins with the premise that you are managing digital material and therefore does not specifically cover digitization except in ensuring the quality of digitized and born digital content to be preserved.

AABC’s Education Coordinator, Lisa Glandt, will be attending the workshop and follow-up sessions alongside the participants and will be an ongoing resource for AABC members in need of digital preservation advice. We’re also planning a number of information sharing activities throughout the year for the benefit of others who may not be able to attend.

  • Dates: October 24-26, 9 am – 5 pm
  • Location: Lower mainland area (location being confirmed)
  • Fee: $550 for AABC members; $700 for non-members
    * Your fee includes lunch and coffee breaks for all three days as well as one group dinner.

Potential registrants are asked to apply by filling out this form. When your application is approved by the instructors, the AABC will send you a link for tuition payment.

Spaces are limited and therefore first priority will be given to participants from different institutions. If more than one person applies from your institution, we will contact you to ask who the priority spot should be given to.

Pre-registration will be complete by July 15th or when spots have filled. After reviewing responses, the AABC and the instructors will be in touch to confirm your spot no later than August 1st; payment will be due by September 1st. This will allow us time to offer waitlist spots to any cancellations that may occur up to this point. Due to the nature of this event we will not be able to accept cancellations after September 1st.

In addition to the workshop in Vancouver, Nancy and Kari will be travelling to Victoria on Thursday, October 27th to give a public lecture. More details coming soon!
