How can library and information professionals help researchers find reliable data about LGBTQ+ communities? What challenges arise when creating a guide to queer data, and what can we learn from the gaps, biases and limitations in the data that is available?
Join the IFLA LGBTQ+ Matters Section on 7 October 2026 for a webinar exploring the creation of the Canadian Queer Data Guide.
Developed by a team of Canadian data librarians and library staff, the guide brings together publicly available data about queer communities in Canada while also addressing the history, limitations and gaps in that data.
During the webinar, members of the team will share their experiences of developing the guide and discuss some of the questions they encountered along the way, including scope, terminology, language, representation, evaluating data sources and the importance of community and individual safety.
The Canadian experience also raises questions that extend far beyond Canada. We hope the webinar will provide an opportunity for library and information professionals from different parts of the world to consider how queer data can be identified, evaluated and made more accessible within their own contexts.
