St. Thomas Public Library Announces Appointment of New CEO/Chief Librarian

The St. Thomas Public Library Board is pleased to announce the appointment of Aaron DeVries as the Library’s new Chief Executive Officer/Chief Librarian, effective Friday, January 1, 2026. Aaron will succeed Heather Robinson, who is retiring after a decade of dedicated service as CEO.

Aaron joined St. Thomas Public Library in 2017 as Manager of Customer Engagement and has since held several key leadership roles, including Manager, Digital and Support Services (2019) and most recently Manager of Strategy and Operations (2024). Prior to his time in St. Thomas, Aaron worked at Innisfil Public Library and IdeaLab as Manager of Creative Making and Discovery, where he led the development of innovative spaces such as a hackerspace and digital media lab.

With over 14 years of experience in public library management, Aaron brings a deep understanding of how libraries can evolve to meet the changing needs of their communities. He is known for bringing innovative events to the library, such as the Songs in the Stacks concert series that was popular during its run. Aaron also led the creation of the Library’s Maker Lab, now a thriving creative hub in St. Thomas. The Maker Lab serves small business owners, crafters, school groups, and countless others as a place to learn, experiment, and create with technology.

“It’s an incredible honour to serve the community that shaped who I am. I look forward to working closely with the Library Board and leading an extraordinary team as we continue to shape a library that reflects the needs and aspirations of a growing city,” says Aaron, who grew up here in St. Thomas.

Aaron is widely recognized for his visionary leadership, warmth, and commitment to innovation. His appointment marks an exciting new era for the Library as it continues to expand its role as a cornerstone of learning, creativity, and connection in St. Thomas.

The Library Board extends its heartfelt thanks to Heather Robinson for her outstanding leadership and dedication to the St. Thomas community. Heather’s guidance has been instrumental in positioning the Library as a forward-thinking and inclusive hub for all residents.
