Library Leadership Excellent and Development

Project LLEAD 2017: Save the Dates

June 15, 2016

In the midst of a successful first year, Project LLEAD (Library Leadership Excellent and Development) announces initial dates for year two. The year-long intensive program begins with a five day residency at Loon Lake, February 24-March 02, 2017.

The ultimate vision of the program is a library sector with the leadership capacity to best serve and advance the quality of life for the people who live and work in their communities, whether municipal, academic or corporate.

To realize this vision, the program focuses on its goal of equipping library leaders with the approaches, processes and competencies demanded in senior leadership roles.

LLEAD participants practice and improve skills that are directly transferable to the library environment in organizational leadership, teamwork, finance, human resources management, and advocacy. At the end of the year-long program, successful LLEAD participants demonstrate the resilience, self-awareness and abilities to influence strategic outcomes at the organizational and community level.

With its distinctive practical, research-based design, Project LLEAD incorporates several features not found in other leadership development programs:

  • Methodology based on solid research and evidence in business, education, librarianship and the not-for-profit sectors
  • Comprehensive needs assessment of library employers
  • Strong focus on individual leader development, rather than leadership development per se
  • Participants nominated by their CEO or Director, with the committed support of their immediate supervisor, and a professional development plan in place
  • Intensive five day residential institute, grounded on confidentiality agreements and geared to building self-efficacy, confidence and self-awareness, as well as the learning to collaborate and influence effectively
  • Assigning each participant two qualified, trained mentors from outside their organization
  • Training each participant’s supervisor in coaching to provide ongoing development and support
  • Commitment of each participant to an organization-specific, “real” year-long professional project
  • Monthly day-long, problem-based sessions to scaffold consistently the knowledge, skills and aptitudes in related areas such as finance, human resources management and advocacy to undergird a commitment to the customer-focused organization
