June 25-27, 2019
Calgary’s Police Museum is very excited to be gearing up to host a Museum Conference which will be held June 25-27th. This conference is designed to appeal to people working in fields that include archives, museums, storytelling, history, and culture.
For our library friends, we offer several sessions that might appeal including paper conservation, teaching history while building character, and top tricks for social media impact. Our opening and closing keynotes are both about storytelling. In “Life Lessons from a Homicide Detective”, our speaker will walk you through the art of telling and learning from difficult stories.
As part of the conference, we will also spend an afternoon exploring Fort Calgary, the birthplace of Calgary and the site of the very first North West Mounted Police settlement in the area. Following the tour, we will stay for a delicious dinner in their officers’ mess, a beautiful space with stunning views of the river and surrounding area. We will spend an afternoon at the Military Museums of Calgary, an amazing facility which combines 7 different museums into one and covers the fascinating history of our four founding military museums and the Naval, Army and Air Force Museums of Alberta. We will spend breakfast at the Calgary Zoo and go behind the scenes with their latest inhabitants –the pandas.
For those of you new to the area, there are two day-tours available for an extra charge– one of the awe-inspiring Alberta badlands and one of the majestic Rocky Mountains.
One last reminder… our conference hotel is a terrific four star hotel, a nine minute drive from our site. It offers fitness facilities, a pool, waterslides, hot tub and onsite restaurant and pub. They are giving us a great deal on rooms but the rate expires June 7th, so anyone looking to book at that rate should do so before then. Please be aware that we will be providing free transportation to and from the hotel to conference events.
