CFLA Copyright Committee Update (April 2022)

April 28, 2022

At the April meeting, the CFLA Copyright Committee discussed the following activities:

Drafting an open letter in response to the inclusion of the copyright term extension in the federal Budget, emphasizing positions previously detailed in CFLA statements.

The pre-print version of the CFLA paper on controlled digital lending remains available on SSRN and the working group is now incorporating comments from the Association of Canadian Publishers and others, prior to submission for publication in June. A position statement will follow, and a presentation is planned for ABC Copyright in May to discuss the position.

The committee will provide an update on CFLA copyright activities at the ABC Copyright conference held May 25-27 (virtual and in person)

The AI working group will be sending a paper on AI and Authorship to the CFLA Board shortly and is working on another on text and data mining and AI

Work on crown copyright and accessibility advocacy continues

Members of the committee participated in discussion of opportunities for IFLA North American Regional Division to engage in copyright and open access activities that would support the work of IFLA and libraries in North America, including accessibility, licensing awareness, fair dealing/fair use in education, digital inclusion.

This message about current activities is the outcome of discussions at our committee in February 2021 about raising awareness of CFLA copyright activities. You are welcome to share it further.
