National Heritage Digitization Strategy: Update (March 2018)

The National Heritage Digitization Strategy (NHDS) Steering Committee shared an update on its work last week.

Supported by a secretariat at Library and Archives Canada, the Steering Committee was formed in October 2016 and includes leaders from libraries, archives, museums, universities, government, cultural organizations and the non-profit sector. The committee sets direction, organizes projects and develops funding models for various initiatives.

Dear colleagues,

First, we would like to update you on some of our recent progress on the National Heritage Digitization Strategy (NHDS):

Upcoming funding program – Thanks to the generous support of an anonymous donor, we will be launching a funding program in the near future. The program will distribute $1 million to cultural heritage organizations in Canada to support digitization. More information will be available soon.

Newspaper pilot project – The first set of newspapers from our pilot project has been digitized and is available online. In total, we were able to digitize and make available almost 600 issues of Windspeaker and we expect to add another 1000 issues from two other publications soon. The project was made possible with funding from the Salamander Foundation.

Changes to the Steering Committee – Congratulations to Sandra Singh on her new position with the City of Vancouver. We thank her for her inspired contribution as NHDS Chair during the initial phases of this project and wish her the best in her new role.

At the January meeting of the Steering Committee I, Martha Whitehead, Vice-provost (Digital Planning) and University Librarian of Queen’s University, was named as the new chair. I look forward to working with the committee during this exciting period for the NHDS.

The committee would also like to signal other recent changes to its membership including: Maureen Clapperton as the new representative for Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec (BAnQ); and Karen Fudge-Jensen as the new representative for the Royal BC Museum.

We also continue to explore collaboration and funding opportunities, test and expand the discovery platform, and work with our international partners on RightsStatements.org.

The NHDS has released a draft content strategy to help guide potential funding projects, a discovery platform and organizational decision-making. We need your help in determining the priorities of the NHDS. Please respond to the following survey by April 6, 2018.

Stratégie de numérisation du patrimoine documentaire : mise à jour (mars 2018)

Chers collègues,

Nous tenons d’abord à vous informer des plus récents progrès effectués dans le cadre de la Stratégie canadienne de numérisation du patrimoine documentaire.

Futur programme de financement – Grâce à la générosité d’un donateur anonyme, nous lancerons bientôt un programme de financement qui nous permettra de distribuer un million de dollars à des organismes du patrimoine culturel du Canada en vue d’appuyer la numérisation. De plus amples renseignements seront bientôt disponibles.

Projet pilote de numérisation de journaux – La première série de journaux de notre projet pilote a été numérisée et diffusée en ligne. En tout, nous avons pu numériser et publier près de 600 numéros de Windspeaker et nous prévoyons d’ajouter bientôt 1000 numéros de deux autres publications. Ce projet a été réalisé grâce au soutien financier de la fondation Salamander.

Comité directeur : modifications – Félicitations à Sandra Singh pour l’obtention de son nouveau poste à la Ville de Vancouver. Nous la remercions de sa contribution inspirée à titre de présidente de la Stratégie pendant les premières étapes de sa mise en œuvre. Nous lui souhaitons bien du succès dans son nouvel emploi.

À la réunion de janvier du comité directeur j’ai, Martha Whitehead, vice-doyenne (planification numérique) et bibliothécaire universitaire de l’Université Queen’s, été nommée présidente. Je suis impatiente de travailler avec le comité pendant cette période excitante de la Stratégie.

Le comité tient également à mentionner d’autres changements récents apportés à sa composition : Maureen Clapperton est la nouvelle représentante de Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec (BAnQ); et Karen Fudge-Jensen est la nouvelle représentante du Musée royal de la Colombie-Britannique.
