Library Director and CEO to retire this fall
Regina Public Library Director and CEO Jeff Barber will retire from RPL in fall 2026, concluding more than two decades of leadership and service with the organization.
“It’s been a privilege to serve our community and work alongside such dedicated staff and community partners,” Barber said. “I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve accomplished together and the role the library continues to play in connecting people, supporting learning, and strengthening our community.”
Barber’s decision was announced at the regular RPL Board of Directors meeting on Tuesday.
“Jeff’s leadership has had a lasting impact on Regina Public Library and the broader Saskatchewan library system,” Marj Gavigan, RPL Board Chair, said. “His commitment to collaboration and equitable access has strengthened libraries across the province, while his dedication to Regina Public Library has shaped it into the organization it is today. His impact leaves RPL stronger, more connected to the community, and a respected, valued institution.”
Barber joined RPL in 2003 during a period of significant financial challenge. He was appointed Library Director and CEO in 2005 and helped stabilize the organization by strengthening its operating frameworks and ensuring it continued to deliver excellent customer service without the need to eliminate services or close branches. He was appointed Library Director and CEO in 2005.
He was instrumental in developing Saskatchewan’s integrated library system – the first and only of its kind – that provides equitable access to library materials in all areas of the province. He continues to be an active member in the Saskatchewan Information and Library Services (SILS) consortium, working with directors across the province to coordinate and deliver excellent library services and resources.
Barber played a key role in the development and construction of mâmawêyatitân centre, a multi-use facility in Regina’s North Central neighbourhood that includes RPL’s Albert Branch, Scott Collegiate, City of Regina programming, and a wide array of community services. He served as chair of the centre’s owners’ group, which includes Regina Public Library, the City of Regina, and the Regina Board of Education.
Barber’s commitment to Regina Public Library and the provision of modern and effective library services has ensured Regina’s public library system continues to be one of the best in Canada.
“On behalf of the City of Regina, I thank Jeff for his leadership and contributions to the Regina Public Library,” Mayor Chad Bachynski said. “Since stepping into the CEO role in 2005, he has strengthened the library’s deep connections with community organizations across Regina and ensured that residents have access to modern, relevant and educational library services. His many years of dedication have shaped RPL into a place where learning and inclusion thrive.”
The RPL Board has contracted a search firm to identify candidates for the position and expects to name a new Library CEO before year end. Barber will remain in place until the fall and is committed to supporting RPL through the transition to a new leader.
