Attendees at Library and Archives Canada (LAC) today for Taking it to the Streets: Summit on the Value of Libraries, Archives and Museums in a Changing World were treated to this video about Sarah Hatton’s Detachment artwork.
From her description:
Detachment honours the lives lost during the First World War and reinforces the enduring importance of collective memory on its 100th anniversary. These artworks are made from thousands of historical brass fasteners that once held together the military records of the Canadian Expeditionary Force.

Very original and thoughtful. A great way to remember the fallen soldiers. Good way also to save the environment
Magnificent! Thank you in memory of my husband’s grandfather who perished in WW1. One of these stars is certainly his.

My book about the 82 WW1 & WW2 fatalities listed on the Cenotaph of Burlington, Ontario would not have been possible without the digitized records of Library and Archives Canada. Sarah has added one more very interesting dimension to the memory of so many of Canada’s youth from so many years ago.
