Theme: The Future of First Nation Public Libraries
First Nations Public Library Week (FNPLW) was initiated in 2000 by Indigenous librarians to raise awareness of their resources, services, programs and activities.
In First Nation communities, this week is not only an opportunity to promote public library services, but it also celebrates cultural uniqueness through creative library programming. As a multi-level, multi-purpose program that encourages all Ontario libraries to join in its celebration, First Nations Public Library Week is an event that can be enjoyed by library patrons and community members across the province.
In the eighteenth year of First Nations Public Library Week (FNPLW) we are looking into the future and exploring The Future of First Nation Public Libraries. This year, FNPLW has switched from a February celebration to an October celebration. First Nation Libraries and Public Libraries across the Province of Ontario will be celebrating Indigenous library and literacy excellence on October 1 through to October 7, 2018.
In the year 2018, let’s imagine what future First Nation libraries will look like. Will there be 3D printers, eBooks, green screens and drones? Or will there be conference tables, recording equipment and Talking Libraries?
With the advent of accessible tech-based equipment which relies on the high-speed internet, librarians are reassessing how patrons interact with physical library space. The safe and reliable library space that First Nation libraries are known for are becoming meeting space and repoisitories for local history and cultural repositories. Communities are embarking on projects related to language revitalization, cultural revitalization while maintaining traditional practices in contemporary times. Libraries are host databases for digitized materials such as photographs, belongings (artifacts), and recordings.
is an exploratory theme that broadens the conversation about what First Nation libraries are today and how First Nation libraries could operate in the future. Public libraries respond to community needs and mirror changes by offering relevant library programming and collections. The Future of First Nation Public Libraries
