Call for Nominations: Canadian Association for Information Science (CAIS) 2024 Awards

The Canadian Association for Information Science (CAIS) Board invites nominations / applications for several awards to celebrate the great work that is being done in the Canadian LIS community:

The deadline for nominations is April 15, 2024, at midnight Eastern Standard Time (EST).

Extended to April 30, 2024 at midnight Eastern Standard Time (EST).

Master’s research award

Purpose of the award

To recognize the excellence of a substantial work of master’s-level research and its contribution to the information field.

Eligibility

Applicants must have completed their master’s thesis in Library and Information Science or a related field in a Canadian higher education institution during the current or last calendar year (e.g., dissertations completed in 2023 or 2024 are eligible for the 2024 award). A CAIS/ACSI membership is not required.

Nomination process

Applicants must submit a document of no more than four (4) pages, including a summary of the research work, which may be a thesis, major research paper, substantial project, or other non-traditional research output; a description of its significance for the information field; and a link to the work. Additionally, applicants must include a letter from a faculty member attesting to its quality and contribution to the information field.

Submitting the nomination

Nomination documents must be submitted as attachments in pdf or word format in a single email to awards@cais-acsi.ca, with the subject line “[Nominee last name] Master’s Research Award 2024.” The deadline is April 30, 2024, midnight Eastern Standard Time (EST). We welcome submissions in English or French.

Selection process

The nominations will be examined by a jury of CAIS members. At the outset of deliberations, jury members shall report any potential conflict of interest related to the nominees and excuse themselves from the selection process if necessary.

Selection Criteria

  • Contribution to theory, knowledge, methodology, or application in the information field, broadly considered
  • Quality of expression

Nature of the award

The award consists of a certificate to be presented to the winner at the CAIS annual conference, along with a prize of $500 CAD. The recipient authors shall also be given the opportunity to present the work at the conference.

Doctoral dissertation award

Purpose of the award

To recognize the excellence of the doctoral dissertation of a recent PhD graduate and of their contribution to the information field.

Eligibility

Applicants must have completed their doctoral dissertation in Library and Information Science or a related field in a Canadian higher education institution during the current or last calendar year (e.g., dissertations completed in 2023 or 2024 are eligible for the 2024 award). A CAIS/ACSI membership is not required.

Nomination process

Applicants must submit a document of no more than two (2) pages, highlighting their dissertation’s significance for the information field, and including a link to the dissertation. Additionally, applicants must include a letter from their supervisor or department director confirming that the dissertation is completed and attesting to its quality and contribution to the information field.

Nomination documents must be submitted as attachments in pdf or word format in a single email to awards@cais-acsi.ca, with the subject line “[Nominee last name] Doctoral Dissertation Award 2024.” The deadline is April 30, 2024, midnight Eastern Standard Time (EST). We welcome submissions in English or French.

  • Contribution to theory, knowledge, methodology, or application in the information field, broadly considered
  • Quality of expression

Nature of the award

Emerging leader award

Purpose of the award

The purpose of this award is to recognize an early-career researcher or practitioner who has contributed to the advancement of the information field in Canada or internationally through their research, practice, or service.

Eligibility

Nominees must have graduated no more than five years prior to the application date, and either have a main affiliation to, or be a graduate from, a Canadian school, department, or faculty offering an ALA-accredited graduate program.

Nomination process

Nominations must consist of the nominee’s CV and two (2) letters of support, not written by the nominee. The nomination letters should highlight the nominee’s contributions to the field and explain how these contributions merit recognition.

Submitting the nomination

Nomination documents must be submitted as attachments in pdf or word format in a single email to awards@cais-acsi.ca, with the subject line “[Nominee last name] Emerging Leader Award 2024.” The deadline is April 30, 2024, midnight Eastern Standard Time (EST). We welcome submissions in English or French.

Selection process

The nominations will be examined by a jury of CAIS members. At the outset of deliberations, jury members shall report any potential conflict of interest related to the nominees and excuse themselves from the selection process if necessary.

Selection criteria

  • Contribution the Canadian information field through achievement in activities including, but not limited to, research, teaching, professional practice, and/or service
  • Demonstrated commitment to leadership in the information field, such as through association involvement, service, mentorship, or project management
  • Involvement in the Canadian Association of Information Science, broadly considered, such as through past conference attendance, presentation, or participation as a moderator

Nature of the award

The award consists in a 500$ cash prize and a plaque to be presented to the winner during the CAIS annual conference.

Career achievement award

Purpose of the award

The purpose of this award is to recognize the exceptional achievements of a researcher or practitioner who has greatly contributed to the advancement of the information field in Canada or internationally.

Eligibility

Nominees must have worked in the field of information science as a researcher or practitioner for 15 years or more. Nominees must have a main affiliation in Canada, or be a Canadian working abroad.

Nomination process

Nominations must consist of the nominee’s CV and two (2) letters of support, not written by the nominee. The nomination letters should highlight the nominee’s contributions to the field and explain how these contributions merit recognition.

  • Significant positive impact on the Canadian information field through:
    • demonstrated commitment to and achievement in research and/or practice, and
    • sustained community contributions that may involve activities such as, but not limited to: association service, mentorship, collaboration, advising work, advocacy, and volunteering
  • Evidence of effective leadership, broadly considered, in the information field

Nature of the award

The award consists of a 500$ cash prize and plaque to be presented to the winner during the CAIS annual conference. The recipient shall also be given the opportunity to present on their work at the conference.
