University of Alberta – Academic Library Residency Program

The University of Alberta Libraries (UAL) invites applications from recent library school graduates interested in pursuing a career in academic libraries.

The UAL Academic Library Residency Program offers early career development and professional work experience in an academic research library. The residency is designed to provide experience to recent graduates interested in exploring a career in research libraries, provide an opportunity to discover the multitude of opportunities within an academic library setting, create mentoring and networking opportunities, as well as provide for professional development and training for recent graduates.

It is anticipated that the successful candidates will assume a variety of assignments appropriate for an introductory appointment. In addition to their residency focus, each resident will be assigned and work with a Project Collaborator on a unique project separate of their home department/unit, assigned to participate in a UAL committee, and will be paired with a Librarian Mentor.

This year, the University of Alberta Libraries is particularly interested in candidates who have an interest in: Linked Data, Digital Literacies, and Digital Scholarship.

Linked Data Resident – Bibliographic Services

As a member of Bibliographic Services, the Resident will work with members of both the cataloguing and metadata teams to develop common frameworks for the transition to linked data workflows. This Resident position will provide a unique opportunity for a new librarian to develop expertise in an emerging area of the profession.

Digital Literacies Resident – Herbert T. Coutts Education Library

As a member of the Coutts Education Library, the Resident would gain experience with collaboration within UAL and the Faculty of Education. This Resident will focus on ongoing efforts in OER and curricular integration in Education and beyond for a variety of digital literacies. The Resident will have the opportunity to gain experience in public services, project management, literature reviews, report writing, as well as making connections across other UAL units.

Digital Scholarship Resident – Digital Initiatives

As a member of Digital Initiatives and the greater UAlberta Libraries’ team, the Resident will have the opportunity to work on a wide variety of digital projects and services as generally associated with digital scholarship and librarianship. The Resident will have the opportunity to play a lead role in the development of the Digital Scholarship Centre’s 3D/VR capabilities, engaging in technical and service planning, research partnership, and support. The position will work closely with user communities to understand needs and opportunities, and can expect to work closely with other library staff and researchers to achieve our goals.

Qualified applicants must:

  • Have graduated from an accredited Canadian library school program in 2018 or 2019
  • Commit to a one year contract appointment with the University of Alberta Libraries
  • Possess superior information management skills
  • Possess an enthusiastic service attitude, excellent communication skills and the ability to adapt to change and to a variety of clients
