Canada’s national, provincial and territorial museums associations are calling on federal political parties to commit to updating Canada’s 30-year-old national museum policy and asking party leaders to share their vision for Canada’s museums prior to election day.

The GLAM Study Toolkit contains tips and tools to help professionals and institutions make further use of the findings in the Value Study of GLAMs In Canada.

“For every dollar invested in these non-profit institutions, society gets nearly four dollars in benefits  — a return that is on par with government investments in transportation infrastructure projects.”

Canada’s national, provincial and territorial museums associations sent joint letters to the leaders of the six major political parties, highlighting the importance of museums and seeking the parties’ positions on critical questions for the sector.

The study will analyze the social and economic impacts of the sector on the basis of data provided by Canadian GLAMs as well as on the basis of a survey of the Canadian population.

The Committee makes 15 recommendations to the Department of Canadian Heritage in the areas of: funding, policy, training and development, infrastructure, Truth and Reconciliation, and collaboration within the museum sector.

BCMA, BCLA, and AABC commit to share expertise, embark on collaborative research projects, explore public outreach opportunities and identify joint funding ventures to strengthen the sector.

Guy Berthiaume closed the Taking it to the Streets Summit with a call to action for the library, archival and museum communities in the form of the Ottawa Declaration.
