Margaret Law joins the Canadian Federation of Library Associations (CFLA) as Interim Executive Director

The Canadian Federation of Library Associations (CFLA) announced the appointment of Dr. Margaret Law as Interim Executive Director effective May 1, 2025. Margaret Law is a library consultant focused on organizational transformation and has previously served as acting CEO of The Alberta Library, CEO of the , Associate University Librarian at the University of Alberta, and President (2002) of the Canadian Library Association.

CFLA-FCAB Welcomes Dr. Margaret Law as Interim Executive Director

The CFLA-FCAB is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Margaret Law as Interim Executive Director of the Federation.

Margaret Law is a library consultant focused on organizational transformation, with projects throughout Canada, Jamaica, Kenya and Lesotho. Most recently, Margaret completed her tenure as acting CEO of The Alberta Library, having revitalized the organization in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Margaret has experience working across library sectors, including Director and Manager roles in rural and urban public libraries, CEO of a regional library system, and roles as Associate University Librarian, Associate Director of Libraries and Copyright Officer at the University of Alberta. Margaret brings additional experience from the special libraries sector, having worked with two library consortia to oversee the design and implementation of cost recovery processes and managed government relations related to funding for academic library resources.

Margaret received her MLIS from the University of British Columbia and holds a Masters and PhD in Business Administration from Athabasca University, along with a MSc. in Organizational Psychology from the University of Liverpool.

Margaret knows the association landscape well, having served as President of the Library Association of Alberta, President of the Canadian Library Association, and as a technical expert to IFLA’s Copyright and Other Legal Matters Committee and a member of IFLA’s Continuing PD and Workplace Learning Standing Committee.

Margaret began her term role as Executive Director of CFLA-FCAB on May 1, 2025. She will be working with the Board and stakeholders to implement recommendations from the CFLA’s recent Organizational and Governance Reviews.
