Dr. Kenneth Gariepy Appointed as Director of uAlberta School of Library and Information Studies

The School of Library and Information Studies (SLIS) at the University of Alberta announced the appointment of Dr. Kenneth Gariepy as its next Director starting on July 1, 2022. He succeeds Dr. Kathleen Delong who has served as Interim Chair of the School since July 2020.

Gariepy joins SLIS from the University of the Fraser Valley where he serves as Head of the Department of Information Studies and Associate Professor.

The University of Alberta School of Library and Information Studies (SLIS) is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Kenneth Gariepy as our new Director, effective 01 July, 2022. He is joining us from the University of the Fraser Valley in Abbotsford, BC, where he serves as Head of the Department of Information Studies and Associate Professor.

Dr. Gariepy holds a PhD in Theoretical, Cultural, and International Studies in Education, and a Master of Library and Information Studies; both from the University of Alberta. He brings a strong record of service and scholarship with over 15 years of teaching experience in several disciplines at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, including as a sessional instructor in U of A Faculty of Education. His current research focuses on academic and intellectual freedom policy, as well as diversity, equity and inclusion in higher education.

As Director of SLIS, Dr. Gariepy will be providing leadership to, and overall administration of, the School in areas including faculty support and evaluation, curriculum planning, assessment and development, and serving our diverse student body. Dr. Gariepy will be the School’s representative in faculty and university planning, and will provide leadership in professional library education at the local, provincial, national and international levels. In his capacity as a citizen of the Métis Nations of British Columbia and Alberta, Dr. Gariepy has articulated his commitment to ensuring that students, faculty, and staff are supported by learning environments that welcome diversity in all its forms.
