Racial Pay Gap: An Analysis of CARL Libraries

July 23, 2020

This paper by Yanli Li (Business and Economics Librarian, Wilfrid Laurier University) uses data from the 2014 8Rs CARL Libraries Practitioner Survey to assess the impact of race on the earnings attainment process based on a sample of 392 CARL library practitioners.

It determines that there is a significant salary disparity between visible minorities and non-visible minorities. Racial differences in job characteristics account for a larger portion of the explained racial salary gap than individual and labor market characteristics. The effect of race on salary is shown to be weaker for librarians than for support staff.
