University of Alberta Libraries Indigenous Internship
March 20, 2018
The University of Alberta Libraries (UAL) is pleased to announce its Indigenous Internship program for 2018, for a First Nations, Métis or Inuit (FNMI) student in the University of Alberta’s School of Library and Information Studies (SLIS).
The Internship will provide an opportunity for an Indigenous person to make a contribution to UAL, either through employment as a student or through other projects, while pursuing a Master’s degree in Library and Information Studies at SLIS. We aim to support new Indigenous students in the SLIS program and increase Indigenous staff members in the library. One student will be admitted each academic year to the internship.
The two year internship will include:
- A part-time paid position in one or more of the UAL unit libraries, undertaking various duties including public service and research or project work. The rate of pay is currently $19.22/hr plus 8.96% premium pay. In the event the intern is unable to work in Edmonton, project work that can be done at a distance may be an option.
- Tuition (full-time or part-time) paid for a student entering the Master’s degree program (in-person or online) at the University of Alberta SLIS for up to two years.
How to apply
Applicants may apply for the internship before being accepted into the UA SLIS program, but the awarding of the internship is dependent on the student attending the UA SLIS program.
To apply, please include the following:
- Resume
- Cover letter, including your goals for the internship and intended contribution to libraries and library clients after graduation
- Reference letter from an instructor or supervisor (past or present)
The successful applicant may be asked to provide proof of Aboriginal identity as defined in the University of Alberta Calendar.
Applications should be sent via email to library.personnel@ualberta.ca.
Application Deadline: May 1, 2018. The internship will begin July 1, 2018 (a later date is negotiable).
