Vote for Yellowknife Public Library in Aviva Community Fund 2017
October 14, 2017
Hello,
The Yellowknife Public Library is currently part of the Aviva Community Fund for 2017! The Aviva Community Fund gives out funding to non-profit organizations based on a voting model. This means, we need votes to win! Please consider sharing the video link and information below on your social media, in your newsletters, and with your friends.
You can learn about our project here:
We want to create a holistic public library for the community of Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. This will be a space that will engage your mental, physical, and spiritual health using western and traditional knowledge.
The idea:
- We want to bring in self-regulation and exercise equipment like, alternative seating like yoga balls, light therapy lamps (SAD lamps), a drinking fountain, yoga mats, and riding work stations.
- Cultural environment: We will build a tent frame/tipi and bring in a boulder to sit on as a way to bring the outside, inside.
- Literature: We will buy more books and audiovisual resources related to physical, spiritual, mental, and emotional health. We will build physical literacy kits for all the seasons! There are activity books where you can read while playing games at home. Holistic health and increased programming: Dene games, traditional Dene medicine, multi-faith presentation, yoga for families, mental health talk, a breastfeeding event, and a local hiking talk.
- Sustainability: This equipment and programming are inexpensive, and after the initial start-up cost, the staff and patrons will be responsible for ensuring the long-term sustainability of the holistic library.
This idea is unique, and if we win, we will be the FIRST PUBLIC LIBRARY IN CANADA with a holistic space. We hope this will inspire other public libraries to follow suit! Yellowknife Public Library is the largest public library in the Northwest Territories, serving its 20,000 residents and visitors.
