Which information studies program are you attending?

I’m currently studying Library Information Technology at Mohawk College in Ontario, Canada.

What are your current classes like? Which is your favourite so far, and why?

My courses have been a nice mix of practical skills that I’ll be able to apply in the field and thoughtful discussions with my peers about how we can better serve our communities through the library. It’s hard for me to pick my favourite course but I love learning about anything related to information literacy. Helping patrons feel confident, happy and supported is always end goal for me.

What was it that initially drove you to librarianship?

My first core memory was my Dad taking me to sign up for my first library card, in that moment a world full of curiosity opened and I’ve never looked back. The opportunity to make small difference in someone’s day whether that’s helping someone find the right resource, access technology or to simply feel welcome in a space that’s in their own backyard is what drives me.

If you could work anywhere, and do anything with information, what would your dream job look like?

My dream role would be working as an Information Specialist in my hometown Library, giving back to my community. It’s a dream role if I am supporting our patrons to create an inclusive, judgment free environment, and help to provide accessible services that meet people exactly where they are at any given moment.

If someone were considering going to information studies, what would you advise them about?

I’d say go for it, no matter your age! It’s meaningful, community-focused work. It also requires an open mind, willingness to constantly learn and a genuine care for others. I’d advise them that they’ll meet some amazing like-minded people along the way, I know I have.

What do you think is the most important aspect of being an information professional today?

I know for me, the most important part of being an information professional today stems from empathy and kindness. Understanding that every patron comes with different needs, experiences and levels of comfort. Meeting them with patience and respect will go a long way for us.
