8Rs and Canada’s Public Libraries

The Canadian Urban Libraries Council (CULC) last week announced a project with the 8Rs Canadian Library Human Resources Research Team to conduct follow-up study of the CULC membership workforce. The project aims to replicate key components of the original research among CULC libraries to assist the community to respond to human resource trends.

8Rs Human Resources Study

CULC/CBUC has commissioned the 8Rs Canadian Library Human Resources Research Team to conduct a follow up study of our membership workforce. The original 8Rs Study conducted in 2004 was a comprehensive examination of the human resource situation in Canadian libraries across all sectors (public, academic, special and school) that culminated in a groundbreaking collection of extensive data.

The current project aims to replicate key components of the original research among CULC/CBUC libraries. In mapping change, the study results will allow the community to respond to human resource trends.

Focus groups and surveys have already been conducted with library leadership and the 8Rs Team is now poised to launch an anonymous survey of staff (called the Practitioner Survey). Participating member libraries will be distributing a link to the survey on behalf of the 8Rs Team in early January.

Broad participation is a vital part of this research project and will greatly contribute to the success of the study.

This research has received ethics approval from the University of Alberta (Pro# 000923185).

The study results will be presented in a report to be circulated in 2020 and may be presented at conferences.
