Introducing Canadian Voices for School Libraries (CVSL)

June 12, 2016

With the dissolution of the Canadian Library Association (CLA), a new organization—Canadian Voices for School Libraries (CVSL)—has emerged to connect school library practitioners and supporters across Canada.

Introducing Canadian Voices for School Libraries

Canadian Voices for School Libraries is a new organization dedicated to fostering the growth of the school library learning commons in Canada and to developing a national network of school library practitioners and supporters.

The notion of a new national school library organization has clearly engaged the group of leaders who have worked so hard to leverage the gains achieved with the publication of Leading Learning and the success of Treasure Mountain Canada. Response to an online survey from school library practitioners, leaders and supporters indicates overwhelming support for the formation of this new national school library organization.

The CVSL Working Group has been hard at work, analyzing results of our national survey and negotiating with the Canadian Library Association for transfer of ownership of major national projects.

As CLA winds down and transfers its assets and responsibilities to other organizations, the CVSL reached an agreement to take on responsibility for:

  • School Libraries in Canada online journal and
  • the national standards document Leading Learning: Standards of Practice for School Library Learning Commons in Canada

The CVSL has also released the results and analysis of a national survey conducted from mid-February to late April around the question of Do We Need a New National School Library Association?
