Kids’ Overdues are Over at the Brampton Library

The Brampton Library announced yesterday that most children’s materials will no longer incur overdue fines.

“Supporting both and working toward barrier-free access for all, we are pleased to announce the removal of overdue fines on most children’s materials,” said Brampton Library CEO Rebecca Raven.

Tuesday, September 4, 2018: Brampton, ON – Effective today, the members of the Brampton Library Board confirm that most children’s materials will no longer incur overdue fines.

“As part of our strategic plan, Brampton Library strives to be a neighbourhood champion and a place for belonging. Supporting both and working toward barrier-free access for all, we are pleased to announce the removal of overdue fines on most children’s materials. There has never been a better time to visit a branch, engage with our knowledgeable staff and explore the opportunities of library membership for everyone in your family,” said Brampton Library CEO Rebecca Raven.

Brampton Library staff has worked collaboratively to prepare for today’s announcement. Kate Alatsas, Manager of Children and Youth Services, couldn’t be happier: “I always encourage children to have their own library cards and to take charge of choosing their favourite titles. Sometimes, those titles would come back to the library late… Has this happened to you? Don’t worry, you’re not alone! One of the hardest parts of my job as a Librarian is asking for your allowance to pay for those little mishaps!”

Starting today, our youngest customers can borrow up to 50 items at a time and return them in good condition. Libraries have the power to change lives and empower kids to become lifelong readers. Stop in to any of our 7 branches across Brampton to find out more!

All Brampton Library branches are open to the public every day, seven days a week. In 2017, our customers visited 2 million times; borrowed 4 million free print and digital items; received library staff responses to 200,000 information requests and used free computer workstations and Google Chromebooks 316,000 times. Our staff present programs for all ages and interests and provide helpful assistance to all—in the previous year alone, 120,500 residents participated in 4400 programs and workshops and enrolled in almost 12,000  eLearning courses for free with their membership. Members enjoy online access to a wide range of digital products and download e-books, movies, music, magazines and newspapers from many countries and more.
