Invitation to participate in research study – The Prevalence of Participatory Archives in Canadian Institutions
December 19, 2024
Dear Colleagues,
Your input is being sought for a study on the Prevalence of Participatory Archives in Canadian Institutions. Please participate in this survey here: https://forms.office.com/r/JhVAkHSURd
On average, it takes 15 minutes to complete.
Intended Participants:
- Archivists and archival professional
- Currently working or have worked at a Canadian archival institution, or archive within a Canadian institution
The questions seek to determine:
- How common are participatory archiving initiatives in Canada?
- What are commonalities in approaches used?
- To what extent are they perceived to effectively ensure diverse narratives are represented?
- What approaches have been particularly successful and why?
- What are the perceived challenges and benefits of implementing a participatory archives orientation in Canadian archival practices?
- Are there any exceptional examples of current participatory archives in development and operation in Canada that may not be noted in the current literature?
The benefits to participants are primarily related to the opportunity to reflect on and share their archival practices as well as their experiences with participatory archives. In examining the state of participatory archives in Canada, and in looking at widely recognized and effective practices, participants’ experience has the potential to contribute to an emerging guideline that can help organizations that might just be beginning work in this area. A benefit to participants may be that they have an opportunity to share their expertise in informing the development of an overall picture of participatory archiving in Canada.
The results of the research study have the potential to provide insights to librarians, archivists and other professionals who may consider including participatory archival practices into their professional practice or organization.
The survey will be open until January 20th, 2025.
The research is being undertaken by Paulina Rousseau, Liaison Librarian, University of Toronto Scarborough Library.
