January 4, 2016
The University of Victoria (UVic) Libraries is pleased to announce Professor Terry Eastwood’s selection as our 2016 Distinguished Alumni Award recipient. The University of Victoria Distinguished Alumni Award recipients are chosen by their respective faculties, divisions as well as the University Libraries. They represent a diversity of minds and backgrounds.
Professor Terry Eastwood (Dip ’72)
Terry Eastwood holds a B.A. and M.A. from the University of Alberta and a Diploma in Education from the University of Victoria. He taught in schools in New Zealand and British Columbia before working as an archivist at the Provincial Archives of British Columbia from 1973 to 1978. In July 1981, he joined the faculty of the School of Librarianship at the University of British Columbia as the inaugural professor in the new Master of Archival Studies (MAS) Program, the first of its kind in North America. From 1981 to 2000, he acted as chair of the MAS program, graduates of which have gone on to play leading roles in their profession in Canada and other countries. On three separate occasions he acted as Director of what became the School of Library, Archival and Information Studies at UBC, and retired holding that position in 2010.
Aside from his internationally recognized work as a pioneer archival educator, Professor Eastwood is known for his contribution to the development of descriptive standards for archival material. In the mid-1980s, he co-chaired a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council sponsored committee that laid the foundations for the development rules to guide archivists in describing their materials. He then played a leading role in development of the Canadian Rules for Archival Description.
Professor Eastwood published over 50 articles and book chapters on various archival topics. He had special interest in archival appraisal, and his research concentrated on appraisal and preservation of digital archival material. He has also written on archives and accountability, preserving records of Canadian ministers of the crown, archival public service, archival education, and the history of archives. He edited and contributed to two books of essays.
Professor Eastwood is a Fellow of both the Association of Canadian Archivists and the Society of American Archivists.
Alumni Award recipients will be honoured at a special ceremony on February 2nd, 2016, during UVic Alumni Week.
