The Centre for Free Expression and the Canadian Federation of Library Associations announced an agreement in principle to manage a single portal and database for libraries to report and access information on intellectual freedom challenges libraries face to items in their collection, and to displays, programs, room usage, and computer access.

The database will include challenges with respect to collection items, programs, displays, community use of space, internet use, or other services.

“Canadian libraries have a responsibility to contribute to a culture that recognizes diversity and fosters social inclusion regardless of heritage, education, beliefs, race, religion, gender, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, physical or mental capabilities or income.”

The CFLA Intellectual Freedom Committee this week released guidance for public libraries that receive a form letter titled Notice of Personal Liability.

Researchers at the University of British Columbia, in partnership with BCLA, are conducting a study titled, “Balancing intellectual freedom and medical disinformation in Canadian libraries.”

The CFLA Intellectual Freedom Committee is reminding members of the Canadian library community to report intellectual freedom challenges from 2021 for inclusion in its annual report.
