13 Questions With: Lisa Gauthier

Who inspires you in your career?

My friends and colleagues.

The first job you ever held and at what age and your first position in the library and/or information services field?

When I was 16, I volunteered for my local library. At the time, I didn’t know what I wanted to do, but I realized I enjoyed working for the community.

Why a career in librarianship?

So I don’t work in a traditional library setting, but all of my professional experiences and education lead me to this point in my career. I hope to stay in this field for a long time and continue to learn and develop.

Coolest thing in your cubicle or office?

I have a Montreal Canadiens plush bear that was given to me by a co-worker. I think he realized that I needed to look at something positive about my favourite hockey team.

What is your guilty pleasure?

Ice cream, chocolate, wine, & re-runs of TV sitcoms from the 80’s and 90’s.

Career advice – what’s your top tip?

Job shadow or reach out to others who work in the field you want to pursue. I think mentorship is really important. Also, don’t be afraid to ask questions. Do your research but be open to new ideas and career options.

What useless skill(s) do you possess?

My ability to assemble any piece of IKEA furniture.

Proudest moment in your professional life?

Working at the Library of Congress. I was there for a brief period of time, but I worked in one of the greatest libraries on the planet!

If you had 24 hours all to yourself, how would you best like to spend it?

I would spend half the day being active as possible (running, skating and yoga) then I would spend the rest of my day chilling out either baking or reading.

If you didn’t work in the information industry, what would you be doing?

I think I would be working for a grassroots organization or involved in politics or community engagement.

How do you stay current in your field?

Social media and blogs from other librarians/info management professionals. There a few professional associations and organizations I belong to and volunteer with.
