Library and Archives Canada is staffing 5 directors general positions in its Collections Sector and User Experience and Engagment Sector:

Collections Sector

Director General, Government Record

Salary: $125,900 to $148,100 (Salary under review)
Closing Date: May 29, 2022

The Director General, Government Record, is responsible for the acquisition, description, and making accessible of the record of the Government of Canada. More specifically, the DG ensures the entire management of the branch and its various components, which are: Government Archives, Government Records Initiative Division, ATIP & Litigation Response.

The DG, Government Record, will develop LAC’s established leadership role providing overarching strategies and solutions for the Government of Canada with respect to the production and disposition of information. This includes confronting the challenges of preserving information in a world where production technologies and formats are rapidly shifting. They will support and advocate for the modernization of ATIP with our GC partners, especially the need for declassification standards and new resourcing models. They will play a leadership role in LAC relations with the provincial, national and international government archival communities.

Director General, Preservation & Digitization

Salary: $125,900 to $148,100 (Salary under review)

The Director General, Preservation & Digitization, is responsible for the analogue preservation and digitization of the collections. More specifically, the DG ensures the entire management of the branch and its various components : Care of Collection, Digitization Services.

The DG, Preservation & Digitization will oversee the management of the 5th largest analog collection in the world, including supporting staff, evergreening equipment, and managing new facilities, as the collection continues to grow. They will lead the design and implementation of a new digitization strategy for LAC, liaising with colleagues in User Experience & Mobilization and Digital Services, leveraging existing expertise and equipment to address large-scale, on-demand, and ATIP-related digitization needs. This will include developing appropriate policies, guidelines, support systems, structures, informatics systems’ needs, as well as objectives and goals.

Director General, Published Heritage & Private Archives

Salary: $125,900 to $148,100 (Salary under review)

The Director General, Published Heritage & Private Archives is responsible for the acquisition, description, and making accessible of the stories of the peoples of Canada.
More specifically, the DG ensures the entire management of the branch and its various components: Published Heritage – Acquisitions, Published Heritage – Description, Private Archives – Science, Governance, and Political Archives, Private Archives – Social Life & Culture.

The DG, Published Heritage & Private Archives will continue LAC’s work to develop and implement respectful description practices, directed by First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Nation partners. They will lead the development and implementation of strategies, plans, approaches and initiatives to identify those individuals, business, social groups, labour groups, cultural organizations, etc, which have been significant to Canadians. They will ensure that we prioritize those people/business/groups who have traditionally been marginalized. They will play a leadership role in LAC’s relations with the provincial, national and international archival and special collections communities.

User Experience and Engagment Sector

The User Experience and Engagement Sector is comprised of three branches: Programs and Engagement; Research and Access; and Communications and Policy.

Director General, Communications and Policy

Salary: $125,900 to $148,100 (Salary under review)

The Director General of Communications and Policy leads the following components: corporate communications, strategic policy and inclusion. He or she provides visionary leadership to deliver plans and products that promote awareness and understanding of Canada’s documentary heritage, and implements solutions aligned with the evolving role of memory institutions and the user needs.

More specifically, he or she leads the development and implementation of LAC’s communication plans and products, as well as the development and implementation of policy instruments. He or she provides assertive leadership in order to ensure ongoing internal dialogue, foster a spirit of collaboration, and support LAC’s commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion. He or she maintains a network of government partners (PCO, JUS, etc.) in order to ensure coordination and monitoring of the public environment.

Director General, Research and Access

Salary: $125,900 to $148,100 (Salary under review)

The Director General of Research and Access leads the following components: Client Services, Online Experience, Regional Services and Digital Humanities. He or she provides visionary leadership in order to deliver programs and services that promote access to Canada’s documentary heritage, and implements solutions aligned with the evolving role of memory institutions and the user needs.

More specifically, he or she leads the effective and efficient delivery of front-line services, such as research help, consultation and reprography of documents, as well as the development and maintenance of LAC’s online user experience, including the website and digital services. He or she maintains a network of regional partners, and leads service delivery in Vancouver, Winnipeg and Halifax. He or she provides assertive leadership in order to promote innovative uses of the collection through workshops, creation of digital humanities-inspired products, etc.
