To propel Freedom to Read Week into its next chapter, four influential organizations—Library and Archives Canada, the Canadian Urban Library Council, the Ontario Library Association, and the Book and Periodical Council—have joined forces.

The research focused on official languages measures in libraries in Canada. It also looked at the contribution of university libraries, on the one hand, and that of community libraries and book fairs, on the other, to the vitality of official language minority communities (OLMCs).

Library and GLAM sector organizations call for federal support for broadband connectivity, access to e-content, municipal funding, library support for vulnerable populations, accessible reading material, funding for Library and Archives Canada, and Canadian publishers and booksellers.

Nineteen Indigenous organizations will receive funding from LAC’s Listen, Hear Our Voices initiative to digitize and make accessible their existing audio and video heritage.

LAC will award up to $10,000 per funding cycle: $5,000 per selected student registered in full-time studies and $2,500 per selected student registered in part-time studies at Canadian colleges or universities for the 2021–2022 academic year, in a program that leads to a career in libraries or archives
