Library and Archives Canada adds “Ontario, Lake (N.Y. and Ont.)” to Canadian Subject Headings

Library and Archives Canada (LAC) last week announced the addition of a new Canadian Subject Heading (CSH) for Lake Ontario to replace the Library of Congress’ updated subject heading for the lake.

LAC employees will cease assigning the LCSH term and will instead assign the CSH “Ontario, Lake (N.Y. and Ont.)” in bibliographic and authority records moving forward.

Library of Congress recently updated the LCSH term representing Lake Ontario to reflect the new name, “Lake America” designated to the lake by presidential executive order.

Because this is a geographic region that largely exists within the boundaries of Canada, and to best reflect known Canadian terminology for the area, Library and Archives Canada has established Canadian Subject Heading (CSH) “Ontario, Lake (N.Y. and Ont.)”. This will ensure that libraries can continue to assign subject headings for the area using the Canadian name for the lake.

LAC employees have been advised to cease assigning LCSH “America, Lake (N.Y. and Ont.)”, and will instead assign the CSH “Ontario, Lake (N.Y. and Ont.)” in bibliographic and authority records moving forward.

Libraries with OCLC Cataloguing and Metadata subscriptions can search, retrieve, and export CSH in the Canadiana authority file. A quarterly update of the CSH file is also freely available for download on the MARC21.ca website. The new CSH heading will be available on this site in the next quarterly update later this fall. Libraries can also obtain a free account to retrieve CSH from LAC’s SFTP server.

La Library of Congress a récemment mis à jour le terme LCSH désignant le lac Ontario afin de refléter le nouveau nom, « Lake America », attribué au lac par décret présidentiel.

Comme cette région géographique se situe en grande partie à l’intérieur des frontières du Canada et afin de refléter au mieux la terminologie canadienne consacrée pour cette région, Bibliothèque et Archives Canada a établi la vedette-matière canadienne (CSH) « Ontario, Lake (N.Y. and Ont.) ». Cela permettra aux bibliothèques de continuer à attribuer des vedettes-matière pour cette région en utilisant le nom canadien du lac.

Les employés de BAC ont été informés qu’ils doivent cesser d’attribuer la vedette LCSH « America, Lake (N.Y. and Ont.) » et qu’ils devront désormais attribuer la vedette CSH « Ontario, Lake (N.Y. and Ont.) » dans les notices bibliographiques et d’autorité.

Les bibliothèques abonnées aux services de catalogage et de métadonnées d’OCLC peuvent effectuer des recherches, récupérer et exporter les données des CSH à partir du fichier d’autorité Canadiana. Une mise à jour trimestrielle du fichier CSH est également disponible gratuitement en téléchargement sur le site web MARC21.ca. La nouvelle vedette CSH sera intégrée à ce site lors de la prochaine mise à jour trimestrielle, prévue plus tard cet automne. Les bibliothèques peuvent aussi obtenir un compte gratuit pour récupérer les CSH depuis le serveur SFTP de BAC.
