Ottawa Declaration: A Call To Action

Guy Berthiaume, Librarian and Archivist of Canada, today closed the Taking it to the Streets: Summit on the Value of Libraries, Archives and Museums in a Changing World with a call to action for the library, archival and museum communities in the form of the Ottawa Declaration:

Ottawa Declaration (December 2016)

Gathered in Ottawa for the Taking it to the Streets Summit, members of the library, archival and museum communities commit to find new ways of working together to increase the visibility and impact of memory institutions.

By adopting this Declaration, we commit to continually adapt and reinvent our institutions, and to promote the full value of libraries, archives and museums to Canadians.

Together, we will:

• Increase collaboration between our institutions and our networks at the local and national levels to catalyze new partnerships that spark creativity and enhance engagement;
• Develop innovative programs and services, and adopt technologies that empower us to engage our publics; and
• Enrich and expand access to our collections to ensure that our institutions contribute significantly to the public good and sustainable development.

Rassemblés à Ottawa pour le Sommet À nous la rue, les membres de la communauté des bibliothèques, des archives et des musées s’engagent à trouver des nouvelles manières de collaborer pour accroître la visibilité et l’impact de nos institutions de mémoire.

En adoptant cette Déclaration, nous prenons donc ensemble l’engagement d’adapter et de réinventer continuellement nos institutions ; un engagement qui vise avant tout à permettre aux Canadiennes et aux Canadiens de reconnaître la pleine valeur des bibliothèques, des archives et des musées.

Ensemble, nous déclarons vouloir :

• accroître la collaboration entre nos institutions et nos réseaux aux niveaux local et national afin de mettre de l’avant des nouveaux partenariats qui vont stimuler la créativité et renforcer l’engagement ;
• élaborer des programmes et des services novateurs et adopter des technologies qui vont nous donner les moyens de faire participer nos publics ; et
• enrichir et élargir l’accès à nos collections, afin de contribuer de façon significative au bien commun et au développement durable.
